For those who don’t know me, I am Kalpana Manivannan. I am a high school teacher turned organic farmer. I am a blogger & an aspiring homesteader on a journey towards zero waste living. I also teach farming classes to school students.
I have a small half acre coconut farm on the outskirts of Chennai where I grow my organic vegetables and have plans of developing it into a self-sustainable space. Currently, we are growing more than 150+ varieties of seasonal vegetables on our farm. We also have a variety of medicinal herbs and around 50 different fruit trees. We have been able to successfully live a Farm to Table lifestyle for many years now.
From growing vegetables and fruits to processing our own cold-pressed coconut oil and preparing chilli powder with our farm grown chillies, making my own turmeric powder etc we have come a long way. We grow pulses and a small quantity of cereal crops like millets, corn etc too. Still a long way to go…
As an Aspiring Homesteader, I also try my best to prepare things myself at home. I make my own soaps, body butters, detergents and cleaning solutions. I also bake my own bread, prepare my own jams, sauces, pastas and cook almost everything from scratch. I try to reduce my waste by composting my kitchen waste (which I use on my farm) and reuse and recycle non-biodegradable waste.
