Homemade Burger buns

No matter how conscious we are about our eating habits, we do succumb to cravings once in a while and not to mention the advertisement industry going over-board with their imagery that makes kids the most vulnerable.

So, I have been looking for a great recipe for homemade burger buns for quite sometime now. Though rarely, the guilt of having to take my kids to the fast food joints for burgers never felt good. After a lot of trial and misses, this one hit the spot. I am sharing with you a recipe that I have tried myself and I guarantee you, that it is a fool-proof one.

This recipe makes 8 buns…more than enough for a family of 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (you could use whole-wheat & maida in 50-50 ratio)
  • 1 cup warm milk (Lukewarm)
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (I used brown sugar/country sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten with little bit of water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds

Procedure:

  1. Combine the milk and yeast in a small bowl and stir until dissolved. Mix in the sugar, butter, and egg then add the salt and flour.
  2. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Set aside in a warm place to rise in a covered bowl for 60 to 90 minutes.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal balls. Press each ball into a 3-inch circle. Rise for 30 minutes, or until the buns are round and puffy. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg/water mixture, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

5. Preheat the oven to 375ºF (Approx 180ºC) . Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown.

6. Cool them on a wire rack.

PS: I skipped the first 3 points as I used my bread maker to knead and rise the dough.

These are best if eaten the same day or within 1 to 2 days of being made. Who am I kidding…it will be gone in no time. If you do have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container.

Once the buns are ready, slice ’em in the middle and start assembling your burger. I used a generous amount of lettuce, tomato and cheese. You can add jalapeños, onions and anything you like in your burger. You can have a vegetable patty, aloo tikki, chicken patty…anything you like.  It’s all up to you, really,  after this point. Add mayonnaise and enjoy your home-made burger.

Guilt-free indulgence…

You could try making the dough with 50% Whole wheat or totally whole wheat too…It might come out a little-bit denser but my sister tried this recipe and she vouches that it comes out as soft and fluffy as the regular ones. So, go ahead and feed your kids burgers minus the mommy/daddy guilt. You can thank me later…

    1. I am definitely sure not all burger buns have egg in them. They cater to vegetarians too and they won’t do such a thing. This particular recipe has egg in it and as it comes out really well, so, i haven’t tried any other recipe with or without egg. You can always try to find a recipe without egg too. Thank you so much for stopping by.

    1. Do try Anshu. I have tried it many times and its a fool-proof recipe. . And yes half n half does make you feel so good isn’t it. My sister tried half n half and it came out beautifully too. So go ahead without any fear. Waiting for your feedback on this.
